about the artist
Tammie Justina Samuel is primarily a self-taught artist, born and raised in Chilliwack, B.C., and currently based in Mission, B.C. She has dedicated years to nurturing and strengthening her skills within the creative fields of study in abstract, surrealism, collage, and assemblage and her most recent works, handmade primitive art dolls that carry over her distinctive style of distressed aesthetic and storytelling to bring these intriguing, often uncanny figures to life. When her hands are not full of paint, she enjoys connecting with nature, deepening her knowledge and techniques of meditation, and exploring the many areas of psychology. As Tammie's practice continues to grow, she is an artist who's not afraid to challenge the boundaries.
"My work begins with emotions, mostly the uncomfortably honest ones. Whether I'm working in abstraction, dollmaking, collage, or experimenting with chemical reactions for assemblage pieces, my process remains the same. I'm less interested in creating an immediate emotional punch and more interested in what happens the longer someone sits with my work, letting it unfold slowly, allowing themselves to open up and become available. In the end, I try to create a space so viewers can bring their own history and their own emotional landscape and find their own layers of meaning within the pieces. I like to think of my artworks as invitations to spend time with the messy places of being human. Each creation is a kind of open-ended narrative; it may come from a psychological awareness or a personal memory, and I try my best not to dictate that."

Frames & Art Care
ABOUT FRAMES : When it's time to frame completed work, vintage and distressed frames are often used, that are discovered while visiting antique shops and local markets. The interplay between the frame and the painting offer a continual narrative, not only to explore the art, but to also see the story embedded in the frame. Each scratch, wear, and imperfection in a vintage frame tells its own tale. This thoughtful combination elevates the overall aesthetic, allowing for a harmonious blend that captivates, and inspires an old world charm that transports viewers to another time.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR ART : It's exciting to bring home your new artwork and find it's forever place on the wall, however, to prevent canvas warp and color fade, it's strongly recommended to avoid hanging your artwork in an area where there are constant fluctuations of temperature change, humidity, and direct sunlight. Living Rooms, Hallways and Bedrooms are great choices. Damaging environments would be areas such as, Bathrooms, Laundry Rooms, Kitchens and damp Basements. Although all paintings are varnished for protection, it helps to avoid these certain environments so your art remains healthy for years to come. Periodic dusting is required with a very soft, large cosmetic brush. Never vacuum the artwork, nor use paper towel, or wet cloth to dust.
